FAIRTRADE CHRSTMAS BEER GOD’S WALLOP CHRISTMAS 2007 – 4.3% ABV

Westerham Brewery is delighted to announce the launch of its Christmas beer. This year’s God’s Wallop is a FAIRTRADE beer, joining the William Wilberforce Freedom Ale as one of just three FAIRTRADE beers available on draught in the UK.

God’s Wallop combines pale ale, amber and dark crystal malts with FAIRTRADE Demerara sugar from Malawi, in an Old Ale style beer using 100% Kentish hops. Once again the beer is pitched at 4.3% ABV.

Each year 10% of the sales of the beer are tithed to charity. This year contributions will be made to the Fairtrade Foundation, Kasinthula Cane Growers and the Zolani Care Trust.

The Fairtrade Foundation licenses the FAIRTRADE mark in the UK, an independent consumer label which appears on products as an independent guarantee that disadvantaged producers in the developing world are getting a better deal. Producer organisations supplying Fairtrade products are inspected and certified. They receive a minimum price that covers the cost of sustainable production and an extra premium that is invested in social or economic development projects.

Kasinthula Cane Growers (KCG) is a smallholders’ project initiated by the Malawian government to help poor, largely illiterate farmers in an inhospitable region in southern Malawi. KCG is registered to supply the Fairtrade market and has received significant orders from three UK companies. Income generated by Fairtrade sales is ring-fenced for community development projects.

The Zolani Care Trust was established in 2006 to help address the needs of 5000 mainly Xhosa people in the Zolani Township near Montagu in South Africa.
