Brewed in collaboration with beer writer Melissa Cole, Oktoberwest is an elegant Märzen with an overall impression of soft, toasted malt notes and a rich, fruity finish. German noble hops and newer hop varieties, Mandarina Bavaria and Hallertauer Blanc, produce a strong amber lager that is complex yet refreshing. Rich malt on the nose. Orange marmalade and candied peel on the palate with a faint grape note, followed by a warming mouthfeel and a crisp finish.
Traditionally this Bavarian beer style (named after the German for March, März), was brewed in March with more hops and stronger alcohol so that it lasted while brewing was forbidden between April 24 and September 28. We brewed ours in June, but bending the rules is what collaborations are all about, so we did.
